Description
The Northern Mockingbird is the only species of mockingbird commonly found in the United States.
Most birds learn their species’ song during the first year of life, but the mockingbird continues to add other songs as they grow older. The Northern Mockingbird can mimic at least 200 song or sounds from their environment such as car alarms, creaky gates, cat’s meow, and other birds.
Since mockingbirds mate for life, one theory is that the female prefers a male who can sing more songs. It may indicate that he is older with proven longevity and excellent survival skills to pass down to his offspring. He may also be more experienced in raising young and have better access to resources. Mockingbirds with the most extensive repertoires have been shown to have the best territories of food.
