Description
This elaborate Beaux-Arts neo-classical memorial building was built on the site of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Designed by John Russell Pope, the building features 16 windows, 16 rosettes on the ceiling, and 16 fence poles in honor of Lincoln being the 16th president of the United States. Fifty-six steps lead up to the building representing one step for every year of Abe Lincoln’s life. There is a symbolic log cabin inside the memorial.
The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park preserves two separate farm sites, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace at Sinking Springs, where he lived until he was two years old and the Knob Creek Farm where Abe lived until he was 7. They are located about 10 miles apart, near Hodgenville, Kentucky.
