Description
A line of Union cannons at Battery De Golyer point across the battlefield at the Confederate line. The Illinois State Memorial can be seen in the distance.
The Union siege was successful because of places like this. The Union chose to concentrate their cannons, but the Confederates spread theirs out. When a Confederate cannon fired, all of the Union cannons would reply, knocking the enemy cannon out. Battery De Golyer continued to pound Confederate fortifications and troops for the entire 47 days of the siege when the weakened Confederates were finally forced to surrender.
This image was shot at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
