Description
This historic landmark building in Omaha’s Old Market District has carried the Baum Iron name since they purchased the building and moved into it in 1905. While the Baum Iron Company was established in 1857, it was originally across the street from this location.
They were the largest wholesaler of iron products in the Midwest, doing business in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming. In 2000, the name of the company was changed to Baum Hydraulics Corporation, and they expanded nationwide.
The building features an Italianate cast-iron storefront which was cast in St. Louis and then assembled on-site in 1880 for the building's original owner, a wholesale grocer. Only two stories tall when constructed, a third and fourth floor were added in 1891.
It is still the operational headquarters of the firm.
