Description
Three brown-capped Amish buggies drive past a field of haystacks on a country lane in New Wilmington, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.
The small villages of New Wilmington and Volant, located approximately 60 miles north of Pittsburgh, are the center of a conservative settlement of Amish that settled here in 1847. They are sometimes referred to as the "Byler Amish" since Byler is the most common last name in the Amish community here. This buggy color combination is unique to Lawrence County.
They are the state's second-largest Old Order Amish sect, with approximately 3,000 Amish in 19 congregations.
