Description
The Carnegie Science Center in the North Shore neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Industrial and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, mostly known for the Carnegie Libraries throughout the United States, hailed from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, what he did nationally was even more extravagantly done for the people of Pittsburgh. Carnegie envisioned a "noble quartet: art, science, music, and literature" where the citizens of Pittsburgh, no matter age, income, or social status, could be exposed to culture.
By the time Carnegie died in 1919, he had given away almost all of his wealth. The museums and libraries are a testament to Carnegie's vision and generosity.
Part of the Carnegie Institute, located in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, the Museum of Natural History, Museum of Art, Library, and Music Hall opened in 1895. At that time, artists and researchers brought samples of their work to Pittsburgh via ship or train to be placed on display at the Carnegie International Art Exhibition.
The two other Carnegie museums, The Andy Warhol Museum and the Carnegie Science Center are on the North Shore.
