Description
The Chruch Street Cafe was once the Casa de Ruiz. Amazingly, it remained in the Ruiz family until 1991, when Rufina G. Ruiz passed at 91.
Believed to have been built in the early 1700s during the founding of Albuquerque, this would make it the oldest house in Albuquerque and one of the oldest buildings in New Mexico. Sadly, much of the house's history has been lost to time, and they are still trying to substantiate its age. Much of the research on the adobe used (Terrones) and first records of the Ruiz family in the area only confirm that the house is pre-1800s.
The home was originally a hacienda, built in the classic Spanish "U-shape." However, that changed in the 1920s when a flood destroyed half of the house.
