Description
This image was captured upstairs in the married officers’ quarters at Fort Hartsuff. Seen much like it would have been in the late 1800’s, you can almost imaging a young wife sitting by the window in this rocking chair waiting for her husband to get off duty for the evening.
Located in Burwell, Nebraska, Fort Hartsuff is typical of Plains infantry outposts. It was built as a buffer between settlers and Native Americans, and to help protect the Pawnee from the war-like Sioux, in the North Loup River Valley from 1874 to 1881. It was acquired as a historical park in 1961 and has been restored as it was when soldiers patrolled the North Loup and Cedar River valleys and pioneered a new trail to the Black Hills gold fields in the 1870s.
