Description
The Observatory at Creighton University is one of the oldest buildings on the Creighton campus.
Before the Observatory was built, John Creighton purchased a telescope for the university in 1884. In 1886, it was finally installed in the newly constructed facility, making it the first Observatory in Omaha and the second one in Nebraska. When John Creighton died in 1907, he left money for the university to purchase a new telescope from London.
The Observatory played a significant role in astronomy. Father William Rigge S.J., who arrived at Creighton in 1885 and was a renowned astronomical researcher and educator, made history when he exchanged signals with the Naval Observatory in Washington DC.
In 1902, Creighton Observatory was placed on the official list of the world’s observatories. It was used regularly until the 1930s. However, the city light eventually became too bright for it to be used.
Today, the Creighton Observatory, is hidden among the trees; you would never know it’s there unless you hunt for it. But, unfortunately, the building is in very poor condition, and there is no public access.
