Description
Circa 1697, Grace Episcopal Church is a religious centerpiece in Yorktown, Virginia's history. Originally the York Parish of the Anglican Church, it was the official Church of England, an integral part of the colonial community at a time when citizens were required to attend services regularly or face criminal prosecution.
The church survived the Revolutionary War but suffered a devastating fire in 1814 that destroyed the roof. Not rebuilt until 1848, the original walls were used in the new construction, and its name was changed to Grace Church with it was completed. It was heavily damaged in the Civil War. In the 1920, it was renovated to the Greek Revival style seen here.
It is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
