A head-on view of the historic Great Northern Railway Steam Locomotive No. 1355.
Baldwin Locomotive Works built this standard gauge steam locomotive in 1909 for Great Northern Railway. In 1924 the Great Northern Railroad, under the direction of its mechanical department, chose a distinct class of ten wheel-style steam locomotives to rebuild into the new twelve-wheel, Pacific-style that had the latest steam technology of the times. Of the 52 steam locomotives that Great Northern converted, No. 1355 is the only surviving engine.
During No. 1355s career, it has pulled both passenger and freight trains. In the 1940s, when the engine was placed into freight service in Minnesota, Tender 1451 was added. In 1954 when Sioux City, Iowa, requested a steam locomotive, Great Nothern sent No. 1355 to the city.
In 2004, the Great Northern Railway Steam Locomotive No. 1355 and Tender 1451 were placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It resides at the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District, also known as the Sioux City Railroad Museum.
