Description
This hot shot furnace in the corner of Fort Massachusetts was meant to be used to heat cannonballs so they could be fired at wooden ships to set them ablaze. Large enough to hold up to 60 cannonballs on the racks, luckily it was never needed. It had been ordered as a kit and was not the right size. Then with the invention of the ironclad ship, used during the Civil War, it was rendered obsolete.
Fort Massachusetts sits on West Ship Island and is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. It is located 12 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast near Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi.
