Description
On February 27th, 1797 sent by President George Washington to settle the question of the boundary between Spanish West Florida and the United States, General Andrew Ellicott selected the highest ridge in the town to raise the first American Flag claiming Natchez for the United States. After the Spanish withdrew from the city, Congress officially created the Mississippi Territory naming Natchez as its capital. That hill is known today as Ellicott Hill in memory of that historic moment.
James Moore, a wealthy merchant, and planter owned the property and began building a house here that same year. Built from 1797-1801, the House on Ellicott Hill was considered the most sophisticated home in Mississippi Territory for many years.
Still significant today, it is the last 18th-century merchant house left on Canal Street and the oldest building in Natchez to be built in the Federal style. In 1974 it was listed as a National Historic Landmark and in 2001 a Mississippi Landmark.
