Artist's Description

A White Faced Ibis stands quietly fishing in the shallow wetlands of the Nebraska Sandhills.

A dark wading bird with a long, down-curved bill, the White-faced Ibis is the western replacement for the Glossy Ibis. Although very similar in appearance and habits, the two species can be distinguished only by slight differences in the coloring of the face and legs. They will often be seen together during migration and they hybridize with increasing frequency. The White Faced Ibis is the more common of the two. He will have red eyes and on adults there will be wide white feathering on the sides and behind the eye. If you see brown eyes with narrow bluish or blue-white narrow feathers around the eye but not encircling it, then you have spotted the more rare Glossy Ibis.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
