Description
Imiola Church is a historic wood structure located on Church Row in Waimea (Kameula), on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was designed by its first pastor, Lorenzo Lyons who is buried on the front lawn of the church along with his wife and young son.
A grass hut had been built on this spot for visiting preachers some time before 1832. When Rev. Lyons arrived, a new building was constructed of stone walls with a thatched roof. By 1855, the stone church was in ruins, and a new church made of koa wood from the nearby forests was started. Some of the walls of the old church still stand, enclosing the grave site.
The name comes from 'imi ola in the Hawaiian language which translates to "seek salvation".
The church continues to be in use, it belongs to the Hawaii Island Association of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ.
Imiola Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
