Description
Originally established in 1886, the town of Montrose was one of the earliest settlements in Sioux County. Located in the Oglala National Grasslands and adjacent to Warbonnet Creek Battlefield, it is considered significant to the history of the American West. The open grassland is a natural environment with very little difference from the time the town was first established.
The Montrose Cemetery and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church built in 1887 are all that remains of the town and represents the lifestyle of the first German Catholic settlers in the 1880s.
