Description
Beautiful fall colors at the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge frame the Rio Grande River and John Dunn Bridge.
John Dunn built this bridge as a toll bridge in 1908 to replace the previous bridge he owned here that burned down. He charged $1 a person to cross it, which was highway robbery at the time. I doubt many could afford to use it. The bridge transported travelers across the Rio Grande to his nearby hotel, and Dunn used it when he was delivering freight and mail into Taos. In 1912, John Dunn sold the bridge to the Territory of New Mexico, which made it free for everyone.
