Description
The last remaining Watch House along the C&O Canal sits at Lock 50. From this angle, you can also see the Mule Barn in the background.
The Lock Tender used the little shanty to keep an eye out for boats. It has windows on either side and is positioned so he could see down to Lock 47 and behind him toward Lock 51.
During the winter off-season, most canal boat Captains preferred to send their mules to a mule barn like this one and hire a Mule Tender to care for them. This particular Mule Barn has been reconstructed as a testament to the hard-working mules along the C&O Canal.
Four Locks is part of the 184.5 mile-long Chesapeake and Ohio National Historical Park in Maryland.
