Description
Photographing Luray Caverns has been on my bucket list for a LONG time. Usually, a 1 hour guided tour, because of the current social distancing guidelines it is currently a self-guided tour. I stayed so long; I thought they were going to kick me out. LOL
The Luray Caverns view leading up to Saracen's Tent was so amazing that I couldn't resist capturing a "sense of place" photograph of this spectacular drapery formation. Let your eye follow the walkway straight back, and that is Saracen's Tent. Appearing smooth and flowing just like a curtain folded by hand, according to National Geographic, it is the best drapery formation in the world!
Luray Caverns is the largest cave in the eastern United States. Located in the Shenandoah Valley town of Luray, Virginia, I consider it a must see if you are visiting Shenandoah National Park. The cave was discovered in 1878 by five local men whose attention had been attracted by a protruding limestone outcropping located near a sinkhole that had cool air rising from it. Luray Caverns was designated as a Natural Landmark in 1974.
