Description
A look down into the 10 story tall Giant’s Hall that features amazing totem-like columns in the upper level. On the far right of this image, you can see the backside of 47 feet tall Double Column, the hall’s centerpiece at the bottom. This massive formation was created when a stalactite and a stalagmite grew together. They did not precisely meet but are joined side by side. When you reach the bottom of Giant’s Hall, you are 164 feet below the surface; this is the deepest part of Luray Caverns.
Luray Caverns is the largest cave in the eastern United States. Located in the Shenandoah Valley town of Luray, Virginia, I consider it a must-see if you are visiting Shenandoah National Park. The cave was discovered in 1878 by five local men whose attention had been attracted by a protruding limestone outcropping located near a sinkhole that had cool air rising from it. Luray Caverns was designated as a Natural Landmark in 1974.
