Description
The back of La Maison Buller from across Petit Bayou.
La Maison Buller built in 1803, is Creole construction. The steeply pitched hipped roof was initially designed for heavy snow loads in France and Canada. The rear of the home features a typical Creole loggia, a wide porch separating two rooms known as cabinets. Cabinets were open on three sides allowing for cross ventilation and used as sleeping quarters.
Maison Buller is part of the Vermilionville Living History Museum, an early Acadian settlement using original restored structures dating from 1765 to 1890. Vermilionville was the name given to the settlement near Bayou Vermilion that eventually grew to be Lafayette, Louisiana.
