Description
Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana.
Known locally as “the Castle on the Hill,” the Monastery Immaculate Conception is the home of one of the largest communities of Benedictine Sisters in the United States. The main building of the complex was constructed in 1883 to 1887, with a major expansion to the complex beginning in 1915, including the Romanesque Revival convent chapel. The chapel interior was completed in 1924.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as the Convent Immaculate Conception Historic District, the historic district includes outbuildings along with the Monastery.
