Description
This hauntingly beautiful vine-covered church circa 1850, is the Rodney Baptist Church AKA Mt. Zion Baptist Chruch No. 1. Stylistically, this white framed church is transitional Greek Revival – Gothic Revival. Built during the architecture transition from Greek Revival to Gothic Revival, the church combines elements from both styles.
Located close to the Mississippi River repeated floods have caused the structure to weaken significantly; sadly, this building is considered severally threatened and will not last much longer. Notice the flood marks on the church, when I visited, it was drying out from its most recent flooding.
It is located in the ghost town of Rodney, Mississippi.
