Description
Look closely; there are two burrowing owls in this picture. Have you found the second one? He is peeking out from his hole. The sneaky one was a complete surprise to me! I did not spot him when I shot this and I bet I looked at this image four or five times before I finally found him.
I think the prairie dog really adds a sense of scale to the image, showing how tiny these burrowing owls really are. They are just slightly larger than a robin.
The burrowing owl can be found in grasslands, deserts and other open dry areas with low vegetation. They live underground in burrows they have dug themselves or taken over from a prairie dog, ground squirrel or tortoise.
Unlike most owls, the burrowing owl is active during the day, but they do not like the midday heat. Although, burrowing owls will hunt on the ground during the day, they do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn like other owls do. They hunt mainly insects and rodents and will fly and even run on the ground when hunting.
This image was taken at the Prairie Dog Town at Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in South Dakota.
