Description
Four bronze eagles carry an oak laurel wreath under the Pacific triumphal arch at the National World War II Memorial in Washington DC.
This chandelier sculpture is an American variation on the Grecian symbol of victory with the Nation’s bird substituted for Nike, the goddess of Victory, holding the laurel wreath to symbolize the United States victory in World War II. The oak laurel wreath was used to express strength.
Located on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, this nationally significant World War II Memorial is dedicated to all Americans that served during World War II. The memorial consists of 56 pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding a plaza and fountain.
