Description
The ruins of both the Pre-Pueblo and the Post-Pueblo Revolt churches at Pecos National Historical Park in Pecos, New Mexico.
Pecos Pueblo sat on a high ridge overlooking the Rio Grande Valley and Sangre de Christ Mountains near an abundant water supply. The Pueblo considered one of the largest and most powerful was four to five stories tall. It was home to a population of 2,000 people, of which 500 were warriors.
When Spain arrived in 1541, they sought to colonize the land and convert the tribes to Catholicism. In 1621, Fray Andres Juarez oversaw the building of a large mission church, Mission Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Porciúncula de los Pecos.
However, that church was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt, when the people rejected Christianity and ran off the Spanish. The Spanish colonists returned just 12 years later in 1692, building a much smaller church inside the footprint of the original church. The Pecos people remained on friendly terms with the Spanish until the site was abandoned in 1838 after many lives were lost from marauding Comanches. The surviving population moved to Jemez Pueblo.
