Description
For the past three weeks, I have been chasing these American White Pelican’s around Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. Their favorite spot has been right in the very center of the lake as far from any shoreline access as they could get.
Then Saturday afternoon after three days of high winds, I found them in a quiet sheltered inlet close to one of the largest boat ramps on the lake. They must have been exhausted after fighting that wind for so many days because they really did care when people came near.
The American White Pelican is largest bird native to North America. This bird, which is distinguished by its white color, often can be found in groups near the shores of the lake and other water bodies. White Pelicans will dip their beaks into the water surface to catch fish and other aquatic organisms. Their wingspan can be from 8 to 9 1/2 feet. They can weight up to 30 pounds but on average are 11 to 20 pounds. Their plumage is almost entirely bright white but during breeding season and until mid to late summer they will have a yellowish hue on their breast feathers.
