Description
The “Recumbent Statue” of Robert E. Lee asleep in his uniform on the battlefield was sculpted by the Richmond, Virginia sculptor, Edward Valentine. It can been seen at Lee Chapel on the grounds of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
The statue is often mistaken as Lee’s sarcophagus, but he is buried beneath here in the family crypt.
The most visited tourist attraction in Lexington, Lee Chapel was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
