Description
In 1905, a cast bronze plaque with the image of oxen pulling a wagon was placed in the exterior wall of the building at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and San Francisco Street right across the street from the La Fonda hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It marks the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail from Kansas City to Santa Fe.
The Santa Fe Trail was America’s first commercial highway serving as a thoroughfare for traders, pioneers, and military personal. From 1822-1880, this 950-mile long trail played an essential role in America’s westward expansion across the Great Plains before its demise when the railroad came along.
