Description
The Scholte House is considered the "grande Dame" of the city of Pella, Iowa.
Located on the square, this was the home of the city of Pella's founder Dominie (Reverend) Hendrik Peter Scholte. Scholte, the leader of a secessionist movement from the organized church of the Netherlands, led several hundred Dutch immigrants to Pella in 1847.
The section of the house, which includes the two-story porch, is the original Greek Revival home. It was built between 1847-1848 and is one of the first buildings constructed in Pella. In 1903 an addition to the house was completed.
The Pella Historical Society operates the home as the Scholte House Museum, and a tea room has been added to the far end of the house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
