Description
The Shawneetown Bank, built between 1839 and 1841, is the oldest bank building in Illinois. Sadly, the bank is listed on Illinois's "Top 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites" list. The bank is located near the state's southern tip in Old Shawneetown, Illinois.
After the American Revolution, Shawneetown served as an important United States government administrative center for the Northwest Territory. It is the only town beside Washington, D.C., chartered by the United States government.
It is said that the Shawneetown Bank refused to buy the first bonds issued by Chicago because they thought no city located that far from a navigable river would ever survive.
