Description
Split Rock Lighthouse faces the wrong direction for a true sunset. Occasionally, if the cloud cover is just right, as the sun dips low over the hills of the Sawtooth Mountains it will throw color through the sky while it washes the lighthouse in an amazing warm glow. The contrast of colors is always striking since Lake Superior down below is already experiencing the blue hour in the shadow of the mountain. I’ve never been lucky enough to plan on it but I have driven past a couple of times at just that moment. This time I had my camera ready…
Split Rock Lighthouse sits on Lake Superior and is part of Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive between Duluth, Minnesota and the Canadian border.
Split Rock Lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011.
