Description
I have spent enough time with this Northern Hawk Owl lately that I have affectionately named him Hawk Hooty. He is quite happy to pose for pictures but I’m very disappointed that I haven’t seen him fly.
The Northern Hawk Owl is the only living species of its genus in the family Strigidae. Unlike most other owls, the Hawk Owl is more active during the day, than it is at night, dawn, or dusk. Named the Hawk Owl since it is said to resemble the Cooper's Hawk, it is mainly characterized by a long, tapered tail, and a small head. Its behavioral is similar to hawks, too. This owl perches on branches atop tall trees, just like hawks do. While flying, it glides softly through the air without making fluttering sounds with its wings, again, just like the hawk.
