Description
A storm rolling in over Mitchell Pass at Scotts Bluff.
Rising over 800 feet above the plains at its highest point, Scotts Bluff is a historic pioneer landmark on the Oregon Trail. This monument is comprised of five rock formations. The trail which passed through a gap in the center of the bluffs is Mitchell Pass. Although this pass was tortuous and hazardous, many emigrants preferred it to following the North Platte River bottom on the north side of the bluff.
Scotts Bluff was a significant milestone for many wagon trains on their way westward as both a navigational marker and as an indicator for where the Great Plains gave way to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
