Artist's Description

Hauntingly eerie, is the best way to describe Pilot Island. Situated at the southern end of Deaths Door passage at the tip of Wisconsin's Door County Peninsula, the island is only eleven feet above the water level at its highest point. An abandoned lighthouse and huge bird population are the only things left on this desolate island known for its frequent and oppressive fog. It is now a National Wildlife Refuge and is closed to the public. Overrun by a large cormorant population whose waste has killed most of the vegetation on the island, it looks much like the set of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
