Description
The gates of Saint Roch’s Campo Santo Cemetery as seen in a thunderstorm.
The most picturesque cemetery in New Orleans, the chapel that sits at its center was named Campo Santo by its founder Father Thevis, a young German priest. Father Thevis built the Gothic church with his own hands and modeled it after the famous Campo Santo dei Tedeschi which translates to Holy Field of the Germans.
Father Thevis came to New Orleans in 1868 to be the assistant pastor at Holy Trinity Church. When the parish lost its pastor to the yellow fever epidemic, Father Trevis prayed to Saint Roch promising to build a church in his honor if the Saint saved the community from any more deaths. There were no other death and Father Thevis made good on his promise.
