Description
The Lake Minatare Lighthouse is one of only seven inland lighthouses in the United States. It was built towards the end of the Great Depression by the Veterans Conservation Corps, a new deal agency that provided jobs to unemployed veterans.
The tower stands 55 foot tall and is built entirely from native stone. The lighthouse serves no functional purpose, but it is a faithful reproduction in its design right down to the spiral staircase. It is a shelter house and observation tower.
For the people in the Nebraska Panhandle, this landmark became a beacon of hope during darker times. It is symbolic of the pioneer spirit that came to light in the panhandle and still shines across the entire state of Nebraska.
