Description
Looking down the spine of the Loess Hills from the overlook in Loess Hills State Forest.
The Loess Hills landform which is composed of wind-deposited loess soil is the most unique landscape in Iowa. This formation is only 15 miles wide and runs 220 miles from north to south along the Missouri River. The Loess Hills rise 200 feet above the flat plains forming something of a “front range”. The only comparable deposits of loess to such an extent are located in Shaanxi, China.
