Description
Perched on one of the highest hills in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on land originally owned by the city’s founder, Newitt Vick is the Warren County Courthouse now more commonly known as the Old Courthouse Museum. Construction on the courthouse began the summer of 1858, making it predate the Civil War. There are four porticos, each supported by 30-foot Ionic columns flanking the entrances. Skilled slave artisans made the bricks and erected the building, which was completed in two years for the cost of $100,000.
Considered an architectural gem, the American Institute of Architects has named it one the 20 most outstanding courthouses in America.
