Description
The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers' confluence makes a beautiful water gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains at The Point in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. From here, you can see three states - West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.
On the left is the Goodloe E. Byron Memorial Pedestrian Walkway. This footbridge is attached to the CSX railroad bridge and provides access to the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath on Maryland's side of the Potomac River.
The bridge ruins were the location of the 1836 B&O Railroad viaduct across the Potomac. A hot spot during the Civil War, Confederate troops, first blew the bridge up on June 14, 1861. It would be destroyed and replaced nine-times during the war. After the war, B&O Railroad erected a Bollman Bridge there, and it was part of the B&O mainline until 1894. Then converted into a highway bridge, in 1924, a flood took out three of the iron spans and was repaired. A subsequent flood in 1936 destroyed the bridge leaving nothing but the bridge supports seen here today.
