Artist's Description
The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers' confluence makes a beautiful water gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains at The Point in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. From here, you can see three states - West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.
On the left is the Goodloe E. Byron Memorial Pedestrian Walkway. This footbridge is attached to the CSX railroad bridge and provides access to the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath on Maryland's side of the Potomac River.
The bridge ruins were the location of the 1836 B&O Railroad viaduct across the Potomac. A hot spot during the Civil War, Confederate troops, first blew the bridge up on June 14, 1861. It would be destroyed and replaced nine-times during the war. After the war, B&O Railroad erected a Bollman Bridge there, and it was part of the B&O mainline until 1894. I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
