Description
A Sandhill Crane tosses a stick in the air and leaps in an elaborate solo dance trying to entice one of the other cranes to join in.
Dancing is emblematic of cranes. It establishes social relationships, announces territorial claims, cements pair bonding and teaches the young. Sometimes it is just for fun, but it usually reflects an emotional state since it draws attention and is energy expensive. When dancing in pairs, the males are generally more dashing and females more reserved, yet both participate vigorously and respond powerfully. When a Sandhill Crane dances solo, the behavior reflects its emotional arousal.
