Description
The Vic Suhling / Gas for Less neon sign on historic Route 66 in Litchfield, Illinois.
Today, the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center is in the location where Vic Suhling’s Gas Station was from 1957 to 1968.
Vic Suhling first leased the property and built his gas station on it. By 1961, he was able to purchase the land from the Modlin family. Vic closed the station in 1968, but Stewart’s Deep Rock gas station opened in the building, finally closing in 1973. The property was sold in 1989, and the building was razed, but the land sat empty for 20 years before it was purchased for the new museum's location. During all that time, Vic Suhling’s neon sign continued to stand on the corner.
The sign was restored, and the museum held a relighting ceremony in 2013.
