Artist's Description

This statue of a young girl releasing a bird can be found in the magnificent gardens at the Eudora Welty House and Gardens in Jackson, Mississippi.

Eudora Welty, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, first moved into this home with her parents when she was just sixteen years old.

She lived here until her death in 2001, doing all her writing in an upstairs bedroom. It was Eudora’s mother, Chestina Welty, who started the garden in 1925. It took decades to finish and was a labor of love for both Chestina and Eudora.

Upon Eudora’s death the house and contents were gifted to the city. It is open to the public as a museum.
The house was declared a Mississippi Landmark in 2001, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 2004.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
