Artist's Description

A long-distance view of the fall foliage at Bowsher Ford Covered Bridge in Parke County, Indiana.

This 72-foot long single-span Burr Arch Truss-covered bridge was constructed by Eugene Britton, J.A. Britton’s son, in 1915. The bridge is named for the Bowsher family, who owned the land around the Ford.

Elmer Garrard initially won the bid for the bridge beating out J.A. Britton & Sons for the job, but he didn’t have the expertise to complete the job on his own, so he hired Eugene Britton to contract it and gave him credit as the builder. J.A. and Lawrence Britton were busy building three other bridges that year, two of which were in Putnam County.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
