Description
Viewed from the Brooks Overlook near Sandstone Visitors Center in southern West Virginia's New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, an empty eagle's nest is accompanied by a solitary Bald Eagle perched nearby.
This occurrence marks my first sight of an eagle occupying this particular nest despite a mated pair having lived on Brooks Island for numerous years. Unfortunately, due to my visit taking place in late July, I missed witnessing the fledging of the eaglets as they had already departed by then. If only I had considered visiting during May or June, it would have been an excellent vantage point to witness the eaglets' activities. The young eagles engage in vigorous wing flapping exercises as they strengthen their wings and practice flying before embarking on their journey away from the nest.
Positioned within a dead tree on the rightmost side of Brooks Island, this specific nesting site remains concealed from view along any other part of the scenic drive.
