Artist's Description

A nighttime photograph of the Capitol Building at the end of Colonial Williamsburg's Duke of Gloucester Street.

Constructed in the 1930s during the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, this capitol building is a recreation of the original building that once stood here. It was decided to reconstruct the first capitol building because of its architectural uniqueness compared to the second building and better documentation of the original design.

The original building was constructed in 1705 when the Capital relocated from Jamestown to Williamsburg. When it was destroyed by fire in 1747, a second capitol building of a different design was built on the same foundation. The second building served at the Capital until 1780, when it moved to Richmond. Once vacated, the old Capitol building served as a court and a school. It was destroyed by fire in 1832, leaving nothing but the outline of its foundations.

Colonial Williamsburg is in Williamsburg, Virginia.

By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change. My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
