Description
The lockhouse high on the hill was the home for the man that managed Dam 5 and the guard lock. It is not lockhouse 45, as many mistakenly believe.
On the left side of the image at the base of the hill is the guard lock. At one time, the guard lock could be opened and shut to regulate the water flow into the canal, but it is now filled with concrete to keep the Potomac River from flooding the area since the canal here is also filled in.
Canal boats traveling upstream passed through the Dam 5 guard lock and entered the Potomac River until they reached Lock 45, .5miles away, where they reentered the canal.
The Dam 5 complex is at mile 106.6 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath.
