Description
During the time when Philadelphia was the national capital from 1790 to 1800, the First Bank of the United States was established in the city. The bank first opened its doors for business in Carpenters' Hall in 1791 before it moved to its permanent home in this blue marble building completed in 1795.
This building is an outstanding example of monumental Classical Revival architecture. Symbols related to money and banking are on the façade conveying strength and dependability. The triangular pediment at the top of the building features a giant eagle, representing America's power and potential. This eagle, carved from mahogany, is believed to be the earliest known architectural reference to the Great Seal of the United States.
