Description
An early morning cityscape view of historic Harper Ferry, West Virginia from across the Potomac River.
This historic town is located in an extremely picturesque spot right at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. With a large number of 19th century buildings, built upon the steep bluffs of the Appalachian Mountains, it is quite charming.
Harpers Ferry is the site of the abolitionist John Brown’s raid on the Federal arsenal in 1859. The raid inflamed tensions between the North and the South and brought the nation closer to civil war. Its strategic location led to a number of major Civil War battles taking place here. During the Civil War, Harpers Ferry changed hands 14 times.
Lower Town Harpers Ferry is designated as Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
